Diamond Education

We love diamonds. All of our diamonds and gemstones are ethically sourced. The diamond industry has established four criteria for evaluating the quality and value of precious stones, commonly known as the “Four Cs:” color, cut, clarity, and carat. However, to ensure identical across-the-board diamond grading and appraisal, the GIA created grading systems for each category. A diamond is 99.95 percent pure carbon, with 0.05 percent trace elements that are atoms that aren’t part of the diamond’s essential chemistry.

A natural diamond is a diamond that is formed under high pressure and high temperatures that exists about 100 miles below the earth’s surface. A natural diamond is mined from the earth, cut, polished, and set into jewelry.

Lab-grown diamond jewelry is a new addition to your collections, but it is also a cost-effective option that means you can expand your jewelry collection, the cost is approximately 20-30% lower than natural mined diamonds. The only difference between a lab-created precious stone and a mined diamond is its origin. A lab-made diamond is "created" inside a facility using innovative technology that resembles the standard in ground diamond development procedure. Lab-formed diamonds are artificially, authentically, and outwardly "indistinguishable" from those found beneath the Earth's surface.

Comparing lab-grown versus mined diamonds side by side, you won’t be able to tell the difference. The same goes if you closely examine the stone with a jeweler’s loupe, which typically has a 10x magnification. A diamond’s identity as a lab-grown stone can only be determined by gemological experts using specialized instruments to pick up trace elements and other signatures related to the way the diamonds are grown.

The only thing that makes a lab-created diamond different from a natural diamond is its origin. A lab-created diamond is “grown” inside a lab using cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process. The result is a man-made diamond that is chemically, physically, and optically the same as those grown beneath the Earth’s surface.

Lab diamonds are not fakes. They’re not cubic zirconias. They have all the same physical and chemical properties of a mined diamond.” says Stephen Morisseau, a spokesman for the Gemological Institute of America, a nonprofit organization that oversees the international diamond grading system.

Sometimes, lab-created diamonds are referred to as synthetic diamonds. While not technically inaccurate, term “synthetic” may be the reason people believe lab-created diamonds are “fake.”

Our designer--"I love ethically mined diamonds and I will not give up on them. But the lab diamonds are a great alternative as they are friendlier on the pocketbook and completely sustainable."

Mining diamonds can negatively impact the environment. During any mining process, the soil, water, and air surrounding a mine become polluted. Diamond mining is no different. Large quantities of soil must be removed to reach the diamonds, reducing available natural land resources. The process of removing soil along the coast forever changes shorelines, which has a wide-ranging impact. In addition, any mine's expansion encroaches on natural animal habitats, decreasing wildlife populations. Diamond mining also affects water supply and quality. Water is used to extract diamonds, but water is a scarce resource in Africa, where many of the world's diamond mines are located.
